Inspiring Engineering Students: “Meet the Engineer” Career Talk and GEESM Visit at AUSMAT
Sunway College engineering students recently had the opportunity to gain valuable insights from two significant events: a career talk by Tai Jun Jet and a visit to the GE Engine Services Malaysia (GEESM) plant.
On 23rd May, students attended an inspiring career talk by Tai Jun Jet, a recent graduate engineer from Coventry University. Jet shared his journey through his mechanical engineering degree, focusing on the lessons he learned about perseverance and resilience. His efforts in programming and designing unmanned drones culminated in his team winning first place at the 2018 Kanazawa CDIO Academy Competition. This achievement led to further opportunities, including participation in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition and the chance to sit in a fighter jet. Jet also spoke candidly about going on a National Geographic expedition to the remote Pacific, battling burnout during his PhD, and the importance of staying humble. Jet will be starting his career as a machine-learning engineer for Sony Japan. He concluded his talk by encouraging students to persevere and remain steadfast in pursuing their dreams.
On 6th June, the students visited the GEESM plant for an educational and engaging experience. The visit began with an introduction to GE Aerospace and its history in Malaysia, followed by a comprehensive safety briefing. Led by a senior production engineer, the students toured the shop floor, witnessing the intricate processes involved in engine inspection and maintenance. They observed engines undergoing repair, the meticulous disassembly and reassembly of components, and the strict tolerances and detailed procedures ensuring the highest quality and standards of maintenance work. The interactive visit included games promoting occupational health and safety, adding a fun element to the learning experience. The students also heard from young engineers in GEESM's outreach and talent program, who shared their experiences studying engineering and joining the company. The tour concluded at noon, leaving the students inspired by the insights gained.
Both events provided the students with invaluable perspectives on engineering careers and the importance of resilience, hard work, and humility. The combination of practical industry exposure and personal career stories enriched their understanding and motivation to pursue their own engineering aspirations.
