Triumph Down Under - Australian Matriculation Graduates Shine on the Global Stage

On the 3rd of February 2024, the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme at Sunway College Kuala Lumpur witnessed a momentous occasion—the graduation of the Class of 2024 (February 2023 Intake). Amidst applause, tears, and pride, 314 graduates had stepped into the next chapter of their lives, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence.

The Class of 2024 have set the bar high by achieving remarkable WACE results. A whopping 32% of the graduates attained an ATAR of 90 and above, 180 graduates earned an ATAR of 80 and 74% of our AUSMAT graduates secured an ATAR of 70 and above, placing them in the top 30% of WACE candidate worldwide. These are the testament of student’s hard work throughout the year.

In addition, a special acknowledgment goes to Mireille Kho Wyern, Tei Chun Wei, Arshinie Saravanan, Wendy Khong Wenxin, Tan Zi Shan, and Shelley Song Si Ni who have excelled in their academic pursuits with their astounding achievements of ATAR 99 and above (placing them in the top 1% of WACE scorers worldwide).

Amidst the sunlit halls of Sunway College, 5 Australian Matriculation graduates – Cheryl Lee Xin Qian, Nyam May Anne, Yee Shinnie, Mireille Kho Wyern, and Wendy Khong Wenxin, soared to unprecedented heights, clinching coveted global recognitions awarded by the School Curriculum of Standard Authority, Western Australia. These graduates, driven by passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment, have not only excelled in their studies but have also left an indelible mark by clinching prestigious Special Subject Award (the top achiever with the highest scores based on the WACE exam) for English as Additional Language or Dialect, and the Special Subject Certificate of Excellence (the top 0.05% of candidates based on the WACE exam scores) for English as Additional Language or Dialect, Chemistry, Mathematics Methods, and Business Management & Enterprise.

During the ceremony, RM6800 worth of book prizes were awarded to 11 graduates, courtesy of Australian universities such as Deakin University, University of Melbourne, Murdoch University, Swinburne University of Technology, University of Western Australia, Victoria University, University of Technology Sydney, Australia National University and Monash University, Malaysia.

The journey to success was not without its challenges. The Australian Matriculation graduates embarked on their academic odyssey armed with determination and a thirst for knowledge. The AUSMAT journey has prepared them to embrace the rigorous curriculum with open minds, immersing themselves in the intricacies of their chosen subjects. Through countless hours of study, experimentation, and exploration, they honed their skills and deepened their understanding, laying the groundwork for future triumphs. We believe they will continue to shine brightly in universities, careers, and beyond.

The graduation ceremony was graced by distinguished guests who have played pivotal roles in shaping education including Prof. Dato Dr. Elizabeth Lee (Chief Executive Officer, Sunway Education Group), Prof. Sibrandes Poppema (President of Sunway University), Ms. Fiona Morris, (Counsellor – Education & Research, Australian High Commission, Malaysia), Ms. Srii Gunaseelan, (Business Development Manager (Education), AUSTRADE), Ms. Gail Taylor (Principal Consultant – International Education, Curriculum, Assessment & Strategic Policy, School Curriculum & Standards Authority), Dr. Cheng Mien Wee (Director of Pre-University Studies) and Ms. Vanitha Satchithanadan (Assistant Director for Pre-University Studies and Director of AUSMAT).

The valedictorian, Mireille Kho Wyern, took the stage and her voice resonating with gratitude. She thanked their families, lecturers, and friends—the pillars of support during their AUSMAT journey. Her speeches echoed the shared experiences of being an Ausmat students for the past year, the moments of doubt, and the triumphs that followed. Through it all, they all emerged stronger, ready to face the world beyond these hallowed halls.
