UNDERSTANDING PSYCHOLOGY: “A VISIT TO THE SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY, SUNWAY UNIVERSITY KL”
With the aim to provide exposure and career guidance to AUSMAT students, a group of enthusiastic learners, who chose general psychology (GTPSY) as their professional skills elective, visited Sunway University's School of Psychology. This tour showcased real-world psychology applications in research and academia, offering a glimpse into our vibrant university environment and the cutting-edge facilities at the Department of Psychology.
The initial segment of the tour concentrated on the captivating domain of cognitive psychology, guided by Dr Michael Jenkins. During this session, students explored various research studies, including a prominent one called the Joint Simon Effect. This fascinating ‘Simon’ task serves as a well-established experimental paradigm, meticulously designed to explore how diverse stimulus properties might intertwine during information processing and decision making.
Beyond this, students were granted first-hand exposure to cutting-edge research equipment, such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) device, which plays an important role in conducting research within this field. The tour also took students to the eye tracker room, an awe-inspiring space where minute eye movements and gestures are systematically captured and measured. This sophisticated technology enables the generation of highly precise insights about visual attention, cognitive processes, and reactions.
In the subsequent session, Dr Woo Pei Jun captivated students with a comprehensive exploration of the innovative baby testing methods employed at Sunway University. As part of the engaging learning experience, students had the opportunity to witness the inner workings of the child observation room and gain first-hand insights into how a one-way mirror facilitates research in this field.
Overall, the session proved to be an invaluable educational experience, enriching students' understanding of developmental psychology and instilling a deeper appreciation for the complexities of human behaviour and perception.
Sunway College wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the esteemed Dr Woo Pei Jun and Dr Michael Jenkins for their invaluable contributions during the tour. By providing such enriching opportunities, they have ignited a deep passion and dedication within them to pursue their studies in psychology. Their generous contribution to the student’s educational journey is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to more opportunities to collaborate and inspire our students further.
