Exciting Airport Visit Enlightens Students on Statistics and Safety Protocols

In an effort to broaden the horizons of students, Sunway College Kuching organised a captivating visit to the Kuching International Airport (KIA), offering an immersive experience into the world of airport operations and management. The primary goal was to acquaint students with the pivotal role statistics play in the efficient functioning of airports, shedding light on their significance in decision-making processes.

The itinerary featured a dynamic blend of educational activities, including a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation and an enriching tour of airport facilities, including terminals and the Airport Fire Rescue Service (AFRS).

Students were treated to a captivating journey through the history and evolution of KIA, gaining valuable insights into its transformation over time. They were also privy to eye-opening statistics showcasing the impact of COVID-19 on passenger traffic and the remarkable surge in demand for cargo services during the pandemic. Additionally, the distinctions between the roles of airport companies and airlines were elucidated, highlighting the role of statistics in shaping future business strategies and expansion plans.

Memorable Tour Highlights

As the tour unfolded, students were guided through airport terminals, where they received in-depth explanations on queue management and passenger flow, offering a firsthand glimpse into the meticulous operational procedures.

The highlight of the visit, however, was the exploration of the AFRS department building. For many students, it was a revelation to learn about the crucial role of firefighting and rescue services within an airport setting. The significance of mathematics in pursuing a career in firefighting was emphasised, fostering an awareness of its importance across various professions.

The experience culminated in an up-close encounter with advanced fire trucks and equipment, allowing students to witness the bravery and expertise of firefighters in action. Expressing heartfelt gratitude, students conveyed their utmost respect to these unsung heroes, acknowledging their pivotal role in ensuring the safety of all flight passengers.
