Ethan Achieves a Perfect MUFY Score, Setting a New Benchmark for Sunway College JB

Ethan Kuan Jian Min achieved the highest overall results for the 1/2024A cohort of the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) programme, with a perfect score of 100. This also means he achieved the highest overall foundation year results globally! This incredible feat, a first for Sunway College Johor Bahru, has made waves within the academic community and inspires future MUFY students to aim for the stars.

Ethan, a 22-year-old from Johor Bahru, shared his journey and motivations behind his success. "I chose MUFY at Sunway College JB because it offers a direct pathway to Monash University in Australia, where I plan to pursue my studies. The MUFY programme's focus on continuous assessment rather than purely examinations suited my learning style better. I believe that internal assessments or coursework helps in evaluating progress more consistently and prepares you for university, where much of the assessments are coursework-based,” he explains.

Ethan’s academic journey has been one marked by impressive achievements which include scoring 6A’s for O-Levels while attending secondary school in Singapore. Beyond academics, he enjoys watching anime and reading light novels, including non-translated Japanese novels that challenge his language skills. "Reading a lot helps. It improves my understanding of the language,” noted Ethan. He also received the Award of Excellence for both English Unit 1 and English Unit 2, scoring a perfect 100 for each.

Ethan is determined to pursue a career in medicine. "I want to study for MBBS and become a doctor. I feel like there is a constant need for doctors to fill this gap in society, especially with the rise of technology and AI. There will always be a need for doctors. Plus, I also want to support my family in the future." As the eldest of four siblings, Ethan feels a strong sense of responsibility towards his family.

Balancing five subjects—Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English was no small task. "The tricky part was balancing coursework, lab work and assessments. Time management was crucial because all my science subjects required very thorough lab reports. Whenever things got a little overwhelming, I reminded myself that it was my choice to take on this challenge. I thought I could do it and gave it a shot – and now I’ve actually made it!" Ethan admitted.

Ethan credits his lecturers, especially Ms Emmy Jong Ee Mei and Ms Wong Shae Lynn for his Pre-U success while the support from family played a significant part in his journey this far. "My dad supported and funded my studies. I’m grateful that he had the confidence in me, which kept me going. I want to ease his burden by achieving my ambition and repaying his kindness. Besides, my experiences during National Service (NS) in Singapore also helped shape my disciplined approach to life,” shared Ethan.

Reflecting on his achievement, Ethan said, "It's just the beginning. There's so much more to come. The university placement team at Sunway College JB has been really helpful in my preparations for the interview with Monash University, Australia" where he is applying for admission into medical school.

Sunway College JB wishes Ethan great success and looks forward to seeing him don the doctor’s coat and stethoscope in the near future. All the best, Ethan!

"Time management is key. Ensure you get enough rest to stay focused in class. Proper planning helps alleviate stress. I balanced my academic and personal life by maintaining discipline and focusing on what was important." - Ethan Kuan Jian Min
