Learning Beyond the Classroom: Building Industry-Ready Skills - Excel Essentials for Data Insights & Visualization Workshop

The Microsoft Excel Essentials for Data Insights & Visualization Workshop was successfully conducted on 06 July 2026 for students from the Diploma in Information Technology (DIIT) and Diploma in Computer Science (DCSI) programmes. The workshop involved a total of 21 students from various intakes.

Conducted by Mr Hasbullah Osman and assisted by Ms Chik Soon Wai, the workshop aimed to enhance students’ Microsoft Excel skills, particularly in data analysis, data management, and visualization techniques that are valuable for both academic projects and future workplace applications.

During the session, students were introduced to essential Excel tools and techniques, including advanced formulas and functions for efficient data processing, Conditional Formatting for identifying trends and patterns, and the use of Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts to summarise data and generate meaningful reports. Participants also explored statistical analysis functions and IF statements to support logical analysis and improve decision-making through data-driven approaches.

The workshop adopted an experiential learning approach, where students engaged in guided practical exercises using real datasets. Through these activities, participants gained hands-on experience in transforming raw data into meaningful insights and developing professional-looking reports using Microsoft Excel.

Overall, the Microsoft Excel Essentials for Data Insights & Visualization Workshop successfully achieved its objectives in strengthening students’ analytical and digital competencies. The skills gained from this workshop will support students in completing academic tasks, preparing for internships, and developing workplace readiness. The positive feedback received also highlights the importance of continuous industry-relevant learning activities in enhancing students’ practical skills and digital capabilities.
