Meet the Sunway College JB Rubik's Cube Speed Solving Whiz, Jayden
The Rubik's Cube is a puzzle toy that has captured the attention of generations the world over since hitting the international market in 1980. It’s timeless appeal has made this iconic puzzle a classic best-seller in the game and toy category worldwide! Coincidentally, we discovered that the college had a national Rubik’s Cube speed solver within our student community – Jayden Tee Kai Yang enrolled for the Cambridge A-Level programme in early 2022, and is somewhat an icon in his own right.
We often say that one should "think outside the box" but in reality, those who do it well are far and few. For 17-year-old Jayden however, thinking outside the box is a way of life. He can solve a Rubik's Cube in under 10 seconds and he does it through practice and visualisation. Speed cubing began as a phase for him when, during his primary school days, he happened to stumble upon friends who were ‘playing’ with the Rubik’s Cube. Fascinated by how the cube works, he bought himself one and practiced daily by learning it online. Since then, this teenager has not looked back.
Jayden never thought his interest could present the opportunity for a competitive career in this sport until he was introduced to the World Cube Association (WCA) and discovered that there were competitions held throughout the world. Since then, he has actively been participating in competitions held across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, among others.
“My improvement has been astounding, I dropped from 2 minutes to 7.71 seconds, setting a national record average only 2 years into this sport and that too was in 2018. Since 2019, I’ve been breaking my own national records, pushing the limit of Malaysia’s speed cubing to a higher level across 2 events, the 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube and the Rubik’s Cube one handed,” gushes Jayden, his affiliation to the sport apparent. He currently holds the national record for single at 5.02 seconds and average of 6.66 seconds. Whereas for the one handed, he holds the national record for single at 7.87 seconds and average of 10.56 seconds.
As a competitive Rubik’s Cube speed solver, Jayden knows that having a strong mentality and self-confidence is a must to thrive in this sport. He says, “My speed cubing career has been like a rollercoaster. There were times when I thought I should quit or take a break but I’m fortunate to have stayed on at the end of the day. Through experience, I know that when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.”
Jayden’s journey as a speed cuber has taught him to expect the unexpected in life. He has managed to balance his professional career with his studies, and has done well in both. He is grateful for the tremendous support from his family and friends throughout his journey. Now in college, he has also been recognised for his excellent academic progress by his lecturers, who are proud of the fact that he achieved all A’s on his recent assessment. The Sunway College Johor Bahru community wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours, and hope that he achieves everything he desires – continued success in speed cubing and an offer to pursue an actuarial science degree in the future. Go Jayden!
