Merdeka Beyond Celebration: A Call to Responsibility

This year’s Merdeka theme, Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni, reminds us that independence is both a gift and a responsibility. Sunway College Ipoh came together with students and staff on 28 August 2025 to celebrate Merdeka in a spirited and meaningful way. The celebration included a Merdeka Quiz, patriotic songs, and traditional games like Congkak, Batu Seremban, and Sepak Bulu Ayam. More than just fun, these activities revived the spirit of patriotism and brought our community closer together.

Yet, Merdeka goes beyond the festivities. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the nation’s independence leaders, and of the duty we now carry to safeguard the freedom, peace, and harmony they fought for. For students, this responsibility begins with the pursuit of knowledge, the cultivation of character, and the readiness to contribute meaningfully to society.

In this way, Merdeka is not only about remembering the past, but also about preparing for the future. By embracing our differences, nurturing our strengths, and moving forward with purpose, we ensure that the spirit of independence continues to thrive for generations to come.

Freedom is preserved not only by remembrance, but by responsibility.
