Both projects were supervised under the MPU General Studies subject Social Issues and Community Engagement (SICE), where students are tasked to address real-life social issues. With the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind, the projects addressed SDG 8, decent work and economic growth and SDG 10 to reduce inequalities in their efforts
Au-some Project studied the needs of Autism Café before creating public awareness about its existence in Damen Mall and proceeded raised funds for the new kitchen in support of their expansion plans. The café hires youths with autism spectrum disorder and trains them in hope that they can be independent to secure F&B jobs in future. They interviewed the founder Mohd Adli Yahya, and proceeded with offline as well as online engagement plans to seek support from the public. Through crowdfunding and booth set-up, they sold items made by the autistic youths and managed to raise a total of RM3281.96 for the expansion plans.
Project BUR S, another group of dynamic students from Victoria University Program in Sunway College supported two social enterprises dealing with differently-abled staff. They offered RC Deaf Mission and Silent Teddies solutions to enhance their online presence, business exposure and shared marketing ideas. They engaged with the deaf community from RC Missions and visited the bakery at Silent Teddies which offers self-help vocational training programs for the deaf community. Project BUR S sold items from the café and collected a total of RM1446. They created specific content for both social enterprises to use which included video guides for customers, vlogs and behind the scenes clips to engage with potential customers virtually. Additionally, the team came up with a proposal for a mobile app meant to serve the needs of the differently-abled community in hope to collaborate with Sunway Diploma Studies (SDS) IT students for the possible development of the app
