Resilience sets top scorer soaring
ACHIEVING an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 99.85 out of 99.95, Mireille Kho Wyern (pic) excelled in her November 2023 sitting of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) examination.
With that score, the Australian Matriculation (Ausmat) graduate from Sunway College secured a position in the top 0.15% globally.
Adding another feather to her cap, she received the Special Subject Certificate of Excellence in Chemistry.
“Through Sunway Ausmat, I learnt to become more resilient and optimistic in the face of challenges,” she said in a recent press release.
“Don’t give up; just keep your head up and focus on what is in front of you,” she advised.
Kho was among the college’s six highest achievers, who included Tei Chun Wei with an ATAR of 99.6, Arshinie Saravanan 99.55, Wendy Khong Wenxin 99.35, Tan Zi Shan 99.3, and Shelley Song Si Ni 99.
Khong is also a recipient of two Special Subject Certificate of Excellence awards, honouring her achievements in Mathematics Methods, and Business Management and Enterprise.
Reflecting on her journey, Khong said time management was a challenge.
“Overcoming it helped me develop essential skills that will prove valuable in the future,” she said.
Another graduate, Cheryl Lee Xin Qian received two awards – a Special Subject Award and a Special Subject Certificate of Excellence – for English as an Additional Language or Dialect.
Nyam May Anne and Yee Shinnie, both recipients of the Special Subject Certificate of Excellence for this subject as well, expressed the need for consistency to achieve success in the Ausmat programme.
“When studying, find a method that works for you and stick to it.
“Alternatively, switch it up sometimes to keep it interesting, just like your choice of study area or the music you listen to,” said Nyam.
Sunway College saw 32% of its Ausmat students achieving distinction in the top 10% globally, with the attainment of seven world awards to boot.
A total of 55% of its graduates achieved an ATAR of 80 and above, placing them in the top 20% worldwide, while 74% secured a position in the top 30% globally with ATAR scores of 70 and above.
