SDS Commemorates the Journey of Collaboration to Train 52 Participants for Kijang Economics Competition

Sunway Diploma Studies is proud to announce that 52 students had attended the training and participated in the prestigious Kijang Economics Competition, which was held online on 26th June 2024. This event marked a significant collaboration between four departments which are Sunway Diploma Studies (SDS), the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) program, the Foundation in Arts (FIA) program, and the Cambridge A-Level Programme.

The event began with a comprehensive briefing on the Kijang Economics Competition by Natalie Loh Woon Lan, an Economics lecturer from SDS. Thereafter students were further inspired by Julius Lee Jun Tao, a former participant of the Kijang Economics Competition, the Malaysian Economics Olympiad (MyEO), and the International Economics Olympiad (IEO). Julius shared his invaluable experiences and insights, motivating the students to strive for excellence. Additionally, Evan Au-Yong Tjun Jie shared his experiences from both the Kijang Economics Competition and the MyEO, providing practical tips and encouragement.

The Kijang Economics Competition is a national online competition, aiming to challenge participants in various disciplines, including economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and business. This year, our candidates were trained to compete in the upper secondary categories, showcasing their knowledge and skills on a national stage. Medallists (gold, silver, and bronze) in the Kijang Economics Competition will qualify automatically for the Malaysian Economics Olympiad (MyEO), and the top performers in MyEO will have the opportunity to attend the National Training Camp. The five best participants will then be selected to represent Malaysia in the International Economics Olympiad (IEO).

Preparation for this competition was spearheaded by Natalie Loh (SDS), with the assistance from Poovaikarasi Sateyen Selen and Michelle Lim Bee Suan (AUSMAT), Nathan Lim Kok Pin (FIA), Lim Thean Hsiang (SDS), and Vasuki Nadarajah and Nedumaran Munusamy (A-Level Programme). A total of 12 students from SDS, seven from AUSMAT, five from FIA, and 28 from the Cambridge A-Level program participated in the competition.

To ensure the best preparation, a series of physical and online workshops were conducted prior to the competition. These sessions were meticulously designed to equip the students with the necessary knowledge and strategies to excel in the competition. Furthermore, to streamline the learning process and ensure effective engagement, all learning materials and practice papers were uploaded to a Microsoft Teams platform, facilitating students to access the content independently and arrange appointments with the lecturers in charge of the Kijang Economics Competition if they require further guidance.

Overall, the efforts of the lecturers and the dedication of the students culminated in a successful and enriching experience for all participants. This initiative reinforces Sunway College's commitment to providing its students with opportunities to excel in various competitive avenues.
