Sunway College JB: From Student to Award-Winning Club President
For Lee Cheng Xi, leadership was never simply about holding a title. It has been a journey of growth and responsibility. The final-year Victoria University Bachelor of Business student at Sunway College Johor Bahru was recently honoured with the ‘Most Outstanding Youth Club President Award’ at the JCI Malaysia Area South Q3 Awards held at the Granite Luxury Hotel, Penang. Under her leadership, the JCI Youth Sunway Business Club JB also received the ‘Most Outstanding JCI Youth Program Award’, recognising the club’s impactful initiatives and meaningful engagement with students on campus.
Cheng Xi admits the recognition came as a surprise. “I wasn’t expecting it. I simply submitted form to JCI Malaysia Area South, detailing our events and initiatives and continued doing my best for the club. Receiving the award is a recognition that the time and effort all our members have invested, paid off,” she shared.
Cheng Xi joined JCI Youth Sunway Business Club JB in April 2025. What started as a simple intention to gain experience and develop soft skills quickly turned into a meaningful commitment to youth development and leadership. Soon after joining, her peers recognised her dedication and elected her as Club President for the current term of office. While she initially thought the role was about making decisions and leading from the front, her perspective gradually changed.
“At first, I thought being president meant just calling the shots and holding authority. But over time, I realised it is more about responsibility as well as lifting members up, supporting them and ensuring the club continues to grow,” she explained.
Under her leadership, the club organised and participated in numerous initiatives that enriched campus life. These included the Little Red Note Growth and Marketing Workshop, Go Global Entrepreneur Talk, World Entrepreneur Day, as well as festival-themed events such as the Mid-Autumn Festival Bazaar and Halloween Day celebrations. Among them, the Mid-Autumn Festival Bazaar became one of the club’s most memorable initiatives, bringing students together through cultural celebration and meaningful engagement. Looking ahead, the club has more exciting events and activities planned for 2026!
Beyond leading the club, Cheng Xi actively represented JCI Youth in workshops and programmes under the wider JCI network, gaining exposure to leadership practices and networking. Balancing academics and leadership responsibilities is not always easy, but Cheng Xi approaches challenges with a simple mindset: focus on what is in front of you, tackle it step by step and prioritise tasks.
Looking ahead, she plans to gain professional experience in an accounting or auditing firm before eventually contributing to the growth of her family business. More importantly, she hopes to continue making a positive impact wherever she goes. Through her journey, she continues to inspire her peers and the wider youth community both within the campus and beyond.
Wishing her all the best in her ongoing journey and future success!
