Sunway College JB Leo Club presented Excellent Club Award by Lions International

The Leo Club of Sunway College Johor Bahru was recently recognised with the Excellent Club Award from Lions International.

For the club, the award is a proud achievement for its members and long-serving Club Advisors, Mr Andrew Seah Cher How and Ms Cecilia Gan Shyuan Fei who have been providing guidance to the Leo Club over the years. But while the award is the part everyone sees, there is plenty that goes on behind the scenes to make a club tick.

Over the past year, the club has been involved in a range of activities and initiatives, including supporting the quarterly Kiwanis blood donation drives, volunteer clean-up at a pet shelter, environmental and community-based projects and the Leo Club Joint Installation as well as Key Officers Training.

What happens behind each activity is a fair bit of work. The Board of Directors (BODs) and members of the club take on different responsibilities. With guidance from their advisors, they have been given the space to take ownership and see their projects through.

One initiative that turned the club’s efforts into direct support for the community was the CNY Spring Prosperity Fair. Funds raised through the event enabled the Leo Club to make a RM1,000 donation to Pertubuhan Gemilang Istimewa in February 2026.

“Beyond the successful events and awards, the real success lies in the transformation of attitude among club members. They took ownership, followed through on instructions and stepped up to take full accountability for multiple projects. Throughout planning the events and activities, they learned to stay calm, adapt quickly and sourced for alternative feasible solutions. It is a good example of how students can learn by doing,” shared advisors Mr Andrew and Ms Cecilia.

For the advisors, seeing how the students have grown are just as meaningful as the award itself. They have witnessed the members become more confident in taking on responsibilities, handling challenges and working together to get things done.

With the Excellent Club Award now under their belt, Sunway College JB Leo Club has plenty of reason to keep the ball rolling. More activities, new ideas and new teams will come along, and the hope is that the teamwork and spirit built by the current members will continue to be passed down to future Leo Club teams. For now, it is a well-deserved win for the Leos and a reminder that sometimes, the best part of an achievement is everything that happens before the applause.
