Web Pentest Essentials Workshop - Explore Cybersecurity with Industry Experts!

Students from Sunway Diploma Studies (SDS) had the opportunity to experience this field first-hand during the Web Pentest Essentials Workshop, a pilot initiative organised by Sunway Digital Technology Solutions and Sunway Group Cybersecurity in collaboration with SDS.

Welcoming 30 students from the Diploma in Information Technology (DIIT) and Diploma in Computer Science (DCSI) programmes, the beginner-friendly workshop aimed to connect classroom learning with hands-on cybersecurity experience.

The workshop provided students the opportunity to go beyond traditional lectures and learn directly from cybersecurity experts. They explored hands-on techniques, gained professional insights, and experienced how ethical hackers tackle real-world challenges. This blend of guided practice and expert mentorship provided them with a unique, practical perspective on securing web applications.

Students were introduced to the fundamentals of penetration testing in a way that was accessible even for beginners with no prior cybersecurity experience. The workshop covered several essential areas, including:

• Offensive Security Mindset: Building the foundational perspective required for ethical hacking.
• Web User Journey: Identifying and securing critical touchpoints within web applications.
• Safe Lab Environment: Providing hands-on practice within a controlled, risk-free setting.
• Ethical Hacking Focus: Concentrating on the core principles of cybersecurity.

The impact of this pilot extended beyond simple knowledge transfer. By utilising a hands-on "safe lab" environment, students successfully transitioned from theoretical understanding to the practical application of industry-standard tools. This shift toward a "security-first" mindset ensures that students are better equipped to identify, analyse, and mitigate vulnerabilities in real-world applications.

Building on the success of this pilot, subsequent advanced workshops will be roll out to further enhance students’ skills, including:

• API & Mobile Pentest: Including deep dives into SAST (Static Application Security Testing).
• Social Engineering: A specialized "Phish the Fish" module.
• Wireless Fundamentals: Covering the essentials of securing wireless networks.

The Web Pentest Essentials Workshop marks another important step in the commitment of SDS to develop industry-ready graduates with real-world technical skills. By combining academic learning with hands-on industry exposure, students gain the confidence and experience needed to thrive in the cybersecurity field.
