Classroom learning is just the beginning at Sunway College. For students in the Sunway Foundation Programme (SFP), education is about making connections - not only between theories and textbooks, but between knowledge and the real world. That spirit of experiential learning came alive recently when 34 Renewable Energy students from the August 2024 intake took part in an exciting industry field trip to Jing Xing Sdn Bhd.

Organised as part of a collaborative initiative between the School of Engineering and Technology and the Sunway Foundation Programme, the visit was more than just an academic outing, but a front-row seat to the future of sustainable industry.

The visit involved a group of 34 Renewable Energy students from the August 2024 intake, accompanied by Dr. Thaneissha, Dr. Shobana and Dr. Ng Lik Yin.

The students were accompanied by Dr. Ng Lik Yin, representing the School of Engineering and Technology, and Dr. Thaneissha, who led the initiative on behalf of the Foundation Programme. Both lecturers share a common goal: to expose students to the professional world early in their academic journey.

It is important that students do not just learn from books. Seeing how renewable energy concepts are applied in real industrial settings helps them think critically, ask better questions, and get excited about their future roles in the field.

The success of the trip was made possible through the behind-the-scenes efforts of Prof. Denny and Pn. Suzana, who were instrumental in establishing the industry connection and making the logistics run smoothly. This is a perfect example of SFP's commitment to holistic student development.

Once on-site at Jing Xing Sdn Bhd, the students were immersed in the realities of the renewable energy industry. They were introduced to state-of-the-art technologies used in water and wastewater treatment systems, high-efficiency boiler operations, modern incineration processes, and sustainable paper manufacturing

These weren't just technical tours; they were eye-opening experiences. Students saw how engineering principles come to life, how waste can be transformed into energy, and how industries are adapting greener practices to meet environmental demands.

For many, the highlight was witnessing how paper waste is repurposed into renewable energy, turning what is usually discarded into a valuable resource. It is one thing to read about sustainability in class, but it is another to see it happening right in front of you.

This field trip was a powerful reminder that real learning often happens outside the four walls of a classroom. It showcased Sunway College's forward-thinking approach that combines academic excellence with practical, hands-on experience.

By blending theory with exposure to cutting-edge industrial practices, the Sunway Foundation Programme ensures its students are better prepared for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow's green economy.

As the renewable energy sector continues to evolve, Sunway is committed to preparing students who are not only knowledgeable, but also adaptable, innovative, and ready to lead. This trip to Jing Xing is just one of many steps in that direction.

So the next time you walk into a Sunway classroom, know this: what you're learning today might just be what powers the world tomorrow.

A sustainable future in action — all this paper waste will be used to generate clean energy.
