SDS DCOMM Collaborates with Swinburne University for a Creative Workshop Blending Tradition with Modern Design
Traditional or modernity? Why choose when you can do both! Recently, Sunway Diploma Studies Department of Communication (SDS DCOMM) hosted a lecture and workshop on General Design, featuring two experts from the Swinburne University of Technology. The event showcased how Malaysian cultural elements can be harmoniously combined with modern design trends, addressing the evolving demands of the design industry.
The session began with a half-hour lecture by Associate Professor Gianni Renda and Dr Andrew Haig, followed by a practical workshop. They discussed the current challenges professionals face in architecture and industrial design, while also stressing the value of Malaysian designers embracing their country’s rich cultural heritage to stay relevant in a rapidly changing industry.
During the workshop, 90 students from various programmes, including the Certificate and Diploma in Digital Creative Content (CDCC and DDCC), as well as the Diploma in Interactive New Media (DINM), transformed their creative ideas into actual design projects. Their work was then evaluated by the two industry experts.
The workshop was a highly interactive experience, sparking creativity and enthusiasm among the students. As they transformed their ideas into tangible designs, many expressed how much they enjoyed the hands-on approach. The chance to work closely with seasoned professionals like Associate Professor Gianni Renda and Dr Andrew Haig added a new level of excitement to the session, allowing students to feel connected to the real-world demands of the design industry. The workshop not only encouraged innovation but also provided valuable insights into the blending of cultural and modern design.
As the workshop progressed, the students engaged in lively discussions about their designs and sought feedback from their peers and the guest lecturers. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of community, allowing participants to build on each other's ideas. The practical application of concepts, combined with the expert guidance from the industry veterans, gave students a deeper understanding of design trends and challenges, while reinforcing the importance of creativity and cultural appreciation in design.
It is the responsibility of SDS DCOMM to provide enriching and valuable experiences to its students, ensuring they are well-prepared for the ever-evolving demands of the professional world. By offering workshops, lectures, and hands-on learning opportunities with industry experts, SDS DCOMM bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications.
These experiences not only enhance the students’ understanding of their fields but also equip them with the skills, creativity, and confidence needed to succeed in competitive industries. Such initiatives foster critical thinking, innovation, and adaptability, all of which are essential in today’s dynamic job market.
SDS DCOMM’s commitment to exposing students to cutting-edge practices, industry trends, and collaborative learning environments underscores its dedication to shaping future leaders in the creative and communications sectors. This comprehensive approach ensures that students graduate not just with a diploma, but with practical expertise and a deep sense of professionalism.
