SDS Students Explores Creativity and Technology with UCA Expert
The Sunway Diploma Studies Department of Communication (SDS DCOMM) reaffirmed its commitment to real-world learning by leading a cross-disciplinary event at the Fashion Hub titled “Balancing Creativity and Technology.”
The session brought together students from Diploma in Communication, Diploma in Interactive New Media, and Diploma in Fashion Design Technology for an engaging exploration of how creativity and technology intersect in today’s industries.
Organised in collaboration with the Fashion Department and the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), the event featured Harriet Croucher, an award-winning lecturer whose work in animation, illustration, and design has earned global recognition.
Harriet captivated the audience with practical strategies for maintaining artistic integrity while embracing technological advancements. She stressed the importance of a well-curated portfolio that reflects process, skills, and personal style, an essential tool for standing out in competitive creative industries.
One of the most compelling parts of her lecture addressed the growing influence of AI, a topic that resonates strongly with SDS students preparing for careers in media and digital content. Harriet encouraged students to view technology as an enabler rather than a threat, highlighting how innovation can amplify creativity rather than diminish it.
Her insights extended beyond theory, offering real-world examples from her experience in traditional animation, documentary storytelling, and experimental film. These perspectives gave students a clearer understanding of how creative professionals navigate challenges while leveraging technology to push boundaries.
The session was highly interactive. Students posed questions about career pathways, portfolio development, and the integration of digital tools into creative practice. The lively discussions reflected a genuine curiosity and eagerness to apply these lessons to their own work. For many, the lecture was not just informative, it was transformative, sparking ideas for future projects and collaborations.
The event also served as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange, with fashion students exploring how technology influences design processes, while communication and new media students examined its impact on storytelling and content creation. This synergy underscores Sunway Diploma Studies’ commitment to fostering collaboration across creative fields.
The day concluded with a group photo that captured the excitement and camaraderie of the participants. Smiles, animated conversations, and eager notetaking throughout the session were clear indicators of its success.
This initiative was more than an academic exercise; it was a strategic effort to empower students with future-ready skills and industry insights. By championing events like these, SDS DCOMM continues to lead in creating platforms for professional engagement, interdisciplinary learning, and innovation-driven education.
